Hoyt’s War takes a satirical poke at the 2016 Presidential Elections through telling the story of a fictional president named Barry Codbag, whose idea of a solution to illiteracy is to make school testing meaningless. And that’s only one of the extremely bizarre ideas President Codbag has for making America great again.Daniel Hoyt, the plucky protagonist of the book, is the unlikeliest of heroes. He doesn’t want to lead a revolution, nor does he seek greatness. All he wants is to enjoy a bit of intimate time with his do-gooding girlfriend, who runs a women’s shelter and thinks Hoyt is capable of more than he imagines.
Enter a special book of answers, which is supposed to save the nation. The book is entrusted to Hoyt, who promptly disposes of it. Until it becomes clear that he’s allowed it to fall into the wrong hands.
With his girlfriend’s life on the line, not to mention the realization that Cogbag’s dystopian American dream must be thwarted, Hoyt is forced to lead his ragtag set of followers against the world’s most powerful dictator. However, has Hoyt blown his chance to save America from Codbag the Nutbag? Will he act in time to save his girlfriend … and the nation? Read the book and find out.
My only tiny criticism of the book was that it could have benefited from a thorough copyediting. However, the author's sense of humor and storytelling ability more than made up for that.
Recommended reading. Especially in light of current events.
